About Envision

Our Story

UBC Envision is the AIChE student chapter of the University of British Columbia. Envision was originally founded as the UBC Chem-E-Car team in 2012. We began with between 5 to 10 passionate members each year eager to apply chemical engineering concepts outside the classroom. By 2015, with increased recruitment efforts and outreach activities to show our commitment to innovation and learning, we attracted more membership and interest from students in our team. In 2016, a generous donation from the Daniel Family Foundation enabled us to grow our activities and provide more opportunities to UBC students. With support from the UBC Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering (CHBE) and its faculty members, we were able to expand our areas of impact by initiating new projects around fuel cell, beer brewing, and biofuels. The former Chem-E-Car team became a part of UBC Envision, a name selected to highlight the diverse areas we aim to impact with our initiatives. Since 2018, we have also officially become AIChE Sister Chapters with the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC), allowing us to build global connections and gain new perspectives in our work. Despite the challenges of the pandemic in 2020 and 2021, our team was able to adapt by moving our operations online and we continued to expand our projects despite the shift. In 2022, a new initiative around skincare innovation and research was proposed, developing the Cosmetic Research and Innovation Team (CRIT). Today, UBC Envision is an umbrella organization for a wide range of projects including the previous Biological Internet of Things (BIoT), current Green Joule and Chem-E-Car projects, and the ongoing development of CRIT.

Team

UBC Envision is powered by more than 50 passionate students from diverse backgrounds. United by a shared passion for technology, innovation, and engineering, our members are working on challenging, multidisciplinary projects that delve into topics like cleaner energy and skincare development. Envision is divided into 3 main current projects that are linked by a common leadership team that oversees all projects and team activities. Our current projects on chemical energy powered cars, biofuel development, and cosmetic research are investigated by our teams, Chem-E-Car, Green Joule, and CRIT. We aim to not only help the student body enrich their university careers, but also help apply their ingenuity and passion to drive projects that have real-world applications. We provide opportunities for networking, learning new skills, exploring passions, as well as attending conferences like the AIChE Regional and National Conferences and the UBC Multidisciplinary Undergraduate Research Conference (MURC).
